as defense secretary. you heard from the president on friday as he nominated senator john kerry as secretary of state and the new speculation about chuckle over at the pentagon. here are the comments of congressman dingell, the incoming democratic member of the house foreign affairs committee. but there is a huge opposition to the potential nomination of chuckled to become the next secretary of defense, even the president obama has not made his decision. the former senator has come under fire for statements he has made, including one where he referred to the pro-israel lobby as the "jewish lobby." what is your reaction to that remark? >> i think that remark is a troublesome and problematic. it shows that the very best, a lack of sensitivity, and at the very worst, prejudice. i am concerned about the nomination. chuck if has been in the senate for a number of years. there is not only a lot of controversy with that remark, but with some of his boats -- votes. i have been hearing it from what my constituents, mainly in opposition to his nomination. >> you mentioned his boats. there are two sets

increase in the deficit, the problem is it is not finance the oil. either have to eliminate the defense department or eliminate all civilian employees. you would not able to administer all this regulation if you don't do something about spending. even with tax increases, the kind i described in the previous question, would not be enough. ineffective regulation. effective regulation can be quite beneficial. in the automobile sector, the mileage requirement, but permits everybody to strive to a higher mark, up chiselling on the mileage stickers on cars. it improves our energy efficiency. that's a good thing. that is spurring growth. but the kind of reforms we have on wall street have not solved the problem. look at what happened last week's at usb, not only wild and irresponsible behavior, but then we have attorney general holder determining that he general holderubs the fullest -- attorney general holders a betty cannot prosecute ubs because he is afraid ubs is too big to shut down and would destroy financial markets. i thought dodd-frank was supposed to fix that. what was so disconcerti

spending at the current levels. the automatic cuts and what they do to the defense department. leon panetta said they would be devastating. we are talking about national security. we live in a dangerous world. if you cut your defense ability by 50%, this is catastrophic. host: from twitter, jody. know there is any principle detection. there are lawsuits for misuse of a weapon. there are a lot of state laws. connecticut had about the toughest laws possible. connecticut had very tough laws . apparently the killer was turned down to buy a rifle because of the background checked. his mother had an arsenal at home. people should be liable if they miss use a weapon. people have these concealed carry weapons. host: democratic caller. caller: i have a couple things here. the fact is that the weapons tingsin the school shoo were bought legally. i have nothing against the so- called assault weapons. i am against the 30-round c lips. it could take two-hand acation instead of just -- two-hand action instead of just one. the amount of recoil is controlled by the power that is put through the shell from

for secretary of defense -- chuck hayes cogel. how will these nominations go/ guest: chuck hagel has not been nominated yet. john kerry was announced by the white house on friday. the fact that kerry was announced does not bode well for the trial balloon of chalk .eguck hagel we have seen john mccain say they are going to vote for him. chuck hagel has been questioned by a number of republicans. lindsey graham is considered a more moderate republican. there is a concern with hagel and the pro-israel lobby. they tried engagement with iran for the first year of the administration and went to the toughest sanctions in history. hagel has been an opponent of those sanctions. if he changed his view, i think that would improve his chances. look at where he is on the foreign policy debate. obama has taken positions that are more to the center than hagel. host: if senator kerry becomes secretary of state, what does he bring? guest: john kerry will have to navigate the new relationship with political islam. as countries open up more and become more democratic, part is affiliated with the muslim brotherh
